Mexico’s president printed an open letter to Pope Francis calling on the Roman Catholic Church to apologise for abuses of Indigenous peoples through the conquest of Mexico within the 1500s.

In the letter printed on Saturday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador additionally asks the Pope to lend Mexico historical pre-Hispanic Mexican or colonial-era paperwork.

“The Catholic Church, the Spanish monarchy and the Mexican government should make a public apology for the offensive atrocities that Indigenous people suffered,” the letter states.

Mr. Lopez Obrador requested the Pope to make an announcement in favour of Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico’s 19th-century independence chief who was as soon as believed to have been excommunicated by the church for his involvement within the rebellion.

However, researchers later mentioned it appeared that Hidalgo had confessed his sins earlier than he was executed and thus was not excommunicated.

Mr. Lopez Obrador mentioned: “I think it would be an act of humility and at the same time greatness for the church to reconcile posthumously with Hidalgo.”

The letter comes as Mexico struggles with the right way to mark the 500th anniversary of the 1519-1521 conquest, which resulted within the loss of life of a big a part of the nation’s pre-Hispanic inhabitants.

In 2019, Mr. Lopez Obrador requested Spain for an apology for the conquest, through which tens of millions of Indigenous individuals died from violence and illness.

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell mentioned on the time that Spain won’t concern these apologies which were requested.
